Remembering Bro Ben: Champion of Indigenous Peoples rights and a human rights defender

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our dear Benedicto Sánchez, who we fondly called Bro Ben, founding Trustee of NTFP-EP Asia, on July 16, 2024.

Bro Ben served as our Corporate Secretary from 2010 to 2021 and remained a dedicated Trustee from our inception in 2004 until 2023. Despite his health challenges in recent years, he stayed actively involved in our community through online meetings and workshops.

His legacy is profound. He was a passionate advocate for Indigenous Peoples’ rights, a human rights defender, and a pioneer of the organic agriculture movement in Negros Occidental. His work extended to roles with the Broad Initiatives for Negros Development (BIND), Amnesty International–Philippines, and as a journalist at the Sun Star Bacolod. He also made significant contributions as a negotiator, mediator, and expert in community-based forest management.

Bro Ben’s impact on NTFP-EP Asia and beyond will never be forgotten.
