The theme of this conference emerged from the results and recommendations from the conference of the previous year. With the theme “Bridging Culture and Commerce: Promoting the Marketing of Indigenous Handicrafts,” last year’s conference saw the need to tackle various issues that apparently confront the indigenous and rural artisans, such as those that violate their rights to their own products. Among others, these issues include copying of indigenous products and crafts by other groups, which places in question the legitimacy of product ownership thus affecting culture and livelihoods of indigenous communities. Ways to protect the rights of indigenous communities over their own arts and crafts have thus emerged as one common point and where initiatives are most needed. Thus, the Non-Timber Forest Products-Task Force (NTFP-TF) organized this year’s conference along the theme of Fair Trade.
